The clamour from various quarters for the federal government to scrap the National Youth Service Corps scheme (NYSC) may for long remain what it has been – unrealised agitations.
On Tuesday in Lagos, Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalong, said the NYSC has come to stay, and that the federal government was convinced that its merits outweighed its disadvantages.
The minister said that the government was putting a plan in place to train interested graduates in skills acquisition after the mandatory one-year service. He added that such graduates would be provided with a start-up capital at the end of the training.
Dalung condemned the usual rejection of corps members by companies and government agencies during their mandatory service year.
“The rejection of corps members by both private and government organisations is highly regrettable,” he said.
The minister said that circulars have been sent to various organisations to accept corps members into their organizations because they are on national service.
He thereafter made a suggestion to the NYSC management to consider the adoption of a quarterly orientation programme for corps members as against the current practice of once every four months.
