President Muhammadu Buhari is being welcomed by President Francoise Hollande of France at the opening of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris France on November 30.
President Buhari arrived in France yesterday for participating in a critical UN conference aimed at agreeing a new global approach to climate change.
The president is expected to present Nigeria’s statement at the opening session before participating in the launching of the International Solar Alliance same day, an initiative of the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi.
The leader of Nigerian nation will also participate in a summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin Republic.
Presidential aide, Femi Adesina, has said that President Buhari is fully aware of the acute threat that climate change poses to Nigerias development through flooding, desertification and insecurity, and many of these accrue from weather-related natural disasters. Negotiators from 195 countries will try to reach an agreement within two weeks aimed at cutting global carbon emissions.
Buhari has been facing a strong criticism from Nigerians for travelling a lot.The Nigerian leader has already made 10 trips in just six months of his tenure.However, presidential aide said that the trips are not for pleasure but for Nigeria.Buhari is expected back to Nigeria on December 2 but is said to embark on another trip to South Africa for forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
